Suzuki V-STROM 1050DE

Since its inception in 2002, the V-STROM brand has attracted massive global fan-fare by providing owners with consummate comfort, convenience, reliability and enjoyment for money.

The V-STROM 1050DE introduces several new features aimed at optimising performance on unpaved surfaces. These include the adoption of a 21-inch wire-spoked wheel, longer rake and wheelbase enhancing controllability on gravel and flat dirt, increased suspension travel for better bump absorption, wider handlebars, wider steel footpegs, aluminium engine protection and an accessory bar as standard equipment. Also newly introduced Gravel [G] mode to the Suzuki Traction Control System and the ability to switch OFF rear ABS.

V-Twin Engine

Powered by Suzuki’s highly acclaimed 1037cc, 90° V-twin, DOHC engine which has further evolved with the latest iteration boasting increased top-end power whilst also conforming to Euro 5 emissions standards.

Thanks to new camshaft profiles and timing, peak horsepower has increased considerably to 79kW / 8,500rpm (106hp).

The highly refined engine begins with a deep rumble low in the rpm range, then progresses through the mid-range along a strong and linear torque curve then keeps building through the high rpm range in a smooth yet enjoyable manner.

Suzuki Drive Mode Selector (SDMS)

SDMS is designed to offer the rider a choice between three different modes that change output characteristics to match riding conditions or preferences.

Mode A (Active) provides the sharpest response at low to mid-range speeds and reaches the top of its power curve at lower rpm. Settings for torque characteristics are finely tuned to deliver the exciting acceleration and fully leverage the V-twin engine’s power. It is well suited for enjoying spirited runs on winding roads in good weather.

Mode B (Basic) reaches the same level of maximum output, but features a more linear curve with slightly softer throttle response at low to mid-range speeds. Labelled as the perfect setting for touring, this mode aims to make the motorcycle more controllable and instil confidence when accelerating, and to make it a good fit for a wide range of rider styles and road conditions in everyday riding.

Mode C (Comfort) provides the softest throttle response and more gentle torque characteristics, delivering power in smoother linear fashion while still reaching the same level of maximum power output. The gentler throttle response and limited torque production as the throttle is opened makes more obedient and controllable when riding on wet or otherwise slippery surfaces, when road conditions are bad, or even when the rider wants to relax and enjoy a ride home after a long outing.

6-Axis IMU

Integrating accelerometers and gyroscopes into a single compact package, the 6-axis Bosch IMU measures angular rate and acceleration to constantly monitor pitch, roll, and yaw.

Bi-directional Quick Shift System

Allows the rider to shift up or down without needing to operate the clutch or throttle. The system delivers clean, silky-smooth upshifts with uninterrupted acceleration. Downshifts are also quick and smooth, thanks to the automatic hands-free blipping function.

Gravel Mode

The V-STROM 1050DE features an additional G (Gravel) traction control mode that allows a certain amount of rear-wheel slip when riding on unpaved surfaces. Not recommended for use on paved surfaces.

Rear ABS Deactivation

For improved controllability on gravel and other unpaved surfaces, the rear ABS can be turned off on the V-STROM 1050DE. The system is also optimised to work in conjunction with the new 21-inch front wheel.

Motion Track Brake System

This system enhances control by allowing ABS activation not only when travelling in a straight line, but also when the bike is leaning whilst cornering. Intervention is determined by monitoring input from the front and rear wheel speed sensors along with vehicle posture data from the IMU. The compact hydraulic ABS unit controls brake pressure in response to the data received. The bike is therefore less likely to try to push itself upright or lose traction, instead maintaining its radius and lean angle to better trace the rider’s intended line through the corner. Even if the rider panics and brakes heavily in a corner, the system assists in maintaining stability while slowing or stopping the motorcycle.

Combined Brake System

Braking confidence is further enhanced via the Combined Braking System which provides braking power to the both front and rear brakes when operating the front brake lever.

Two-mode ABS

This system allows the rider to select between two levels of ABS intervention. Mode 1 provides minimal intervention, while Mode 2 intervenes more proactively.

Lightweight Aluminium Chassis

The V-STROM 1050’s compact, lightweight aluminium chassis is engineered to maximise agility, comfort, utility and reassuring riding pleasure. Every aspect reflects a focus on great handling and control in a broad range of real-world conditions.

The latest generation offers riders the choice between optimisations geared towards their preferences for pursuing different types of adventure riding.

The V-STROM 1050DE aims to enhance performance and control when exploring off the beaten track.

Engine Protection

The V-STROM 1050DE adopts a rugged looking aluminium engine protector to match its tough image, as well as new side and centre stands designed to match the taller ground clearance of the 1050DE’s custom chassis geometry.

KYB Suspension

43mm KYB inverted fully adjustable front forks deliver a smooth, controllable ride and feature stable damping characteristics well suited to adventure touring. The link-type KYB rear shock contributes to agility and stability, and its preload can be adjusted by simply turning the dial by hand. This is particularly beneficial when preparing to ride two-up with a pillion or when carrying a load.

Longer Aluminium Swingarm

The V-STROM 1050DE adopts a new longer version of the proven rugged and lightweight swingarm design from the V-STROM 1050. While retaining the same level of vertical and lateral rigidity that provides nimble handling, it also increases torsional rigidity by approximately 10% to support straight-line stability.

5-inch TFT LCD Multi-information Display

A new custom 5-inch full-colour TFT LCD multi-function instrument panel features clearly legible information displays, keeping the rider fully informed on the motorcycle’s systems and settings, and supplying real-time operating status information.

The tachometer doubles as a programmable RPM indicator light that blinks when the engine reaches a preset speed.

The display setting can be manually switched between Day (white) and Night (black) displays or this can be done automatically, ensuring visibility is maximised at any hour and in any riding situation.

Suzuki DNA Styling

The distinctive styling incorporates elements of both Suzuki’s legendary DR-Z desert racer and the large off-road model DR-BIG. The characteristic beak design first adopted by Suzuki stays true to Suzuki’s heritage while also further evolving the design to be more aggressive and bolder for the new generation V-STROM.
